And, this very post is not the first 2019-thing to be delivered late. No excuses: This has been very conscious prioritizing. As stated in <a href=\"\/en\/2020\/01\/12\/2019-my-year-in-review\/\">My Year in Review<\/a> my priorities were very clear. Now without further ado here comes my summary of the Global Scrum Gathering 2019 in beautiful Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global Scrum Gathering summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s some Gathering specs the Scrum Alliance likes to advertise with. the summary is much shorter compared to the recap of <a href=\"\/en\/2018\/10\/23\/global-scrum-gathering-london-2018-recap\/\">London 2018 (which was even two parts)<\/a>. So this first time was a record for me anyways, but even experienced hosts of Open Spaces will have rarely seen one with this many people and this many topics. 80-90 sessions were presented during the pitches and excellently organized by the Gathering team, making day 2 of the Gathering a day \u201cby the community for the community\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Monday Mingle in the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palaisliechtenstein.com\/en\/garden-palace\/general-information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>Liechtenstein Garden Palace<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Monday Mingle, a Scrum Gathering tradition, took place in an impressive venue! A short bus drive from the conference grounds at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.messe.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Messe Wien<\/a> is the Liechtenstein Garden Palace, which, as we had confirmed, is not part of the EU. Thanks to Schengen (I guess) we could enter without passport control. Celebrating outside of Austria, whilst in the middle of Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So. Last night I left the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EuropeanUnion?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EuropeanUnion<\/a> for a quick visit on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Liechtenstein?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Liechtenstein<\/a> territory. Gold plating wherever you looked, massive stairways, sky high ceilings and giant halls. Starting the evening made my jaw drop a few centimeters: The place itself, but particularly the first floor art collection made for great conversation starters. Impressive what wealth a small principality can accumulate: The art collection was stunning. Visually this was the most memorable part of the conference. Agendashift is a framework for change. The session itself was intense. Even though the room was not crowded, people got lost: The model is complex so each part was to be conveyed with a practical exercise. The exact tasks were not always 100% clear, so we went to discuss general things regarding Scrum and making it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What puts me off a bit is how even in 2019 this can still be a thing. There are several widely accepted models for change, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Change_management#Change_models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Kotter (opens in a new tab)\">Kotter<\/a>\u2019s probably being most widely known. Of course <em>Creating a Sense of Urgency<\/em> and <em>Building a Guiding Coalition<\/em> come before actual <em>Discovery <\/em>and <em>Exploration<\/em>. These two map easily:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Discovery &gt; <em>Form a Strategic Vision and Initiatives<\/em><br>Needs and outcomes form the theoretical basis for this.<\/li><li>Exploration &gt; <em>Enlist a Volunteer Army<\/em><br>Given the whole change is run by the <em>Guiding Coalition<\/em>, it can only be put to work in the field: With people volunteering for trying (trialing) the change or parts of it (<em>Enlist a Volunteer Army<\/em>).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose is to <em>Generate Short-Term Wins<\/em>, while any blockers will be resolved by the <em>Guiding Coalition<\/em>. <em>Mapping<\/em> and <em>Elaboration<\/em> are catalysts to <em>Sustain Acceleration<\/em>. While more and more people in the company adopt the change, it\u2019s important to keep the agenda visible. <em>Elaboration<\/em> of the change is required until finally the <em>Change has been Institutionalized<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, the heart of Agendashift are the few (good, but not new!) recommendations for the Guiding Coalition (the Change Agents):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start with needs (which you should always do anyways since you <a href=\"\/en\/2018\/08\/22\/agile-reading-list-recommendations-beginners-progressives\/\">read Simon Sinek\u2019s \u201cAlways start with Why\u201d<\/a>)<\/li><li>Agree on outcomes (which is something any project manager, PO, ScrumMaster does at the end of any conversation)<\/li><li>Keep the agenda for change visible &#8211; the most fundamental aspect of Agendashift, since it\u2019s not explicitly mentioned at Kotter\u2019s. Generally a best practice among ScrumMasters: Where better to be transparent about the change than in a public physical task board somewhere?<\/li><li>Manage options, testing assumptions &#8211; options should not be left unaddressed. Decide swiftly if the teams don\u2019t have preferences. Assumptions should never be the basis for anything (<a href=\"\/en\/2018\/02\/26\/quotes-agile-leadership-communication\/\"><em>If you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME<\/em><\/a>), so test them!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scientific Method to Hire Great ScrumMasters &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/paveldabrytski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pavel Dabrytski (opens in a new tab)\">Pavel Dabrytski<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Radical Innovation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pavel gave an engaging session about hiring ScrumMasters. It turns out, we are aligned. Various teams around a dozen or so tables had a project and their POs were to organize with other POs to deliver the best results. The main point Kim highlighted in this session with practical evidence was: The way to organize work in an agile company is via Product Owners. They need to distinct their backlogs while at the same time strongly aligning them, where alignment is relevant. Moving this alignment to the team level will lower productivity tremendously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When an Agile Leadership Coach Becomes a Leader Himself &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epicagility.nl\/team\/jeroen-molenaar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Jeroen Molenaar (opens in a new tab)\">Jeroen Molenaar<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Leader in You: Share Your Story<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funny anecdote: I was sitting in a session and thought \u201cThis is so goddamn boring.\u201d When I checked my phone, I realized this wasn\u2019t the session I wanted to attend. This wasn\u2019t the session of Jeroen Molenaar!<br>I asked the person next to me whether the schedule had changed and he told me \u201cNo, you\u2019re right, but these are separate 15-minute sessions.\u201d Then he added that he was only there, because his session was next. So <em>this <\/em>was Jeroen Molenaar! Good laugh. Some minutes later, when the current talk had ended, he started sharing his story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moral of the story: Agile Coaching for executives is one thing &#8211; being the executive and (even in a small company) being personally responsible for the jobs of the people who work for you, is another thing. We should keep this in mind while we Agile Coaches do \u201cour thing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given it\u2019s brevity this was an interesting and entertaining session especially since Jeroen used the story of how today\u2019s Space shuttle (or at least the boosters) are measured in widths of the average Roman horse\u2019s bum. (see <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.de\/books?id=NHDhM2uT3HUC&amp;pg=PT40&amp;lpg=PT40&amp;dq=roman+horse+carriage+spaceshuttle+train+track&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=j6q7ibQh-Y&amp;sig=ACfU3U0NMfJ-K8trwZzi8tghtkdiJdtswA&amp;hl=de&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwirlMCEwKvnAhXD-KQKHQsDAtU4ChDoATABegQIChAB#v=onepage&amp;q=roman%20horse%20carriage%20spaceshuttle%20train%20track&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Global Trends: Facing up to a Changing World<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fun, Fear and Focus &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fabulous-brain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Friederike Fabritius (opens in a new tab)\">Friederike Fabritius<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Closing Keynote<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great closing keynote. Not quite as awe-inspiring as <a href=\"\/en\/2018\/01\/30\/sgdub17-closing-keynote-lyssa-adkins-we-are-the-leader-we-have-been-waiting-for\/\">Lyssa Adkins in Dublin 2018<\/a>, but really great nonetheless. Fun, Fear and Focus was a bit of a tailored version of her equally named session at Google (which is public by now, see below, highly recommended). Some little things to note, which served as a reminder for me in my work life again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fun, Fear and Focus are the basis for performance and innovation.<\/li><li>Our phones are constant sources of fun and fear, but not of focus.<\/li><li>What also helps on a personal level is: Sport, Sleep and Snacks.<\/li><li>And last but not least: Don\u2019t buy clothes, you won\u2019t wear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Friederike Fabritius: &quot;Fun, Fear, and Focus: The Neurochemical Recipe for [...]&quot; | Talks at Google\" width=\"688\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pWi-oCySuFA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Some things I\u2019ve noted for myself to look into after the conference, that I didn\u2019t know of before are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/sociocracy30.org\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Sociocracy 3.0<\/a> @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voxelgroup.net\/blog\/en\/voxel-hires-xavier-albaladejo-to-consolidate-and-export-its-organizational-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Voxel<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NwqG5W9b37o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Beyond Budgeting<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line: Previous Global Scrum Gatherings have inspired me more. Mostly due to the fact how intense hosting a session was. Both in terms of preparation and also by how much people\u2019s feedback will accompany you over the course of the conference (even after the closing keynote, two days later, I still got people recognizing me and chatting with me about my session). Still even though I got less out of it, I hope I could give something back, inspiring others in turn with my session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would recommend visiting a Global Scrum Gathering to anybody even remotely interested.
